Giving students access to technology in the classroom plays a significant role in their learning creating new avenues of accessibility for all students. It plays an especially important role in special education. My wonderful 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th graders require kid-proof cases for their new Fire HD10 devices. Thanks to a very generous gift from Donors Choose, my students were recently the beneficiaries of five beautiful new Amazon Fire HD10 tablets and needless to say, they are all extremely excited and can’t wait to use their tablets. The tablets provide a nice customized learning experience accommodating a variety of learning styles/methods and gives teachers, students, and families more power to tailor the child’s instruction.
Children with developmental and/or behavioral challenges, particularly those on the autism spectrum or those with sensory processing disorders, may be overwhelmed and even immobilized by the traditional classroom environment and this is where the benefits of educational technology truly makes a difference.
My students have many challenges in addition to those listed above including social anxiety, attention-based disorders and mobility impairment concerns that make it even more critical for me to provide each student with individually customized learning experiences using assistive technology tools.
Because the needs of my students vary, they tend to thrive when they have a personalized learning program that addresses their individual challenges so they can learn at the pace that best suits them. Giving my students sturdy cases will protect their new devices from any accidental drops and scratches in the hands of busy learners.
