Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in a low socioeconomic and often rough area of Los Angeles. Although they do not live in the best of neighborhoods, I strive to give them the best education for a brighter future.
My students are 48 energetic, inquisitive, smart 5-6 year old students from diverse backgrounds in the dual language program.
They consist of 50% English Language Learners with a Latino background and 50% English only students with Latino and African American backgrounds. I love that my students are diverse in their backgrounds and in their Spanish abilities. They are able to learn from each other as they begin their journey into biliteracy and bilingualism.
My Project
Writing is such an important part of a good education. We write to express our thoughts and ideas, we write to reinforce things that we learn in class, and we write to hone our creativity. For this reason, my students need their very own writing journals.
In order to develop good writers, my kindergarteners need to write every day.
These journals will give them the tool they need to write, draw, and practice what they've learned. My kindergartners will use this as independent practice. They will be able to start their journal with pictures and gradually move into words and then sentences. They will use this journal for both prompted and free topic writing. I know they will enjoy expressing themselves in their very own book.
I love that the requested primary journals are kid friendly with big lines for small hands that are just learning to write. Students will also be able to develop their fine motor skills as they practice their penmanship. Additionally, they will get to practice storytelling through drawings and art. And in the end, it is a great keepsake for them to take home and share with others.
