My Students
I teach in a diverse Title One school where the children mainly rely on their teachers for information. My students live in an impoverished neighborhood where each of them receive free lunches. Within my classroom, there is a mixture of students with disabilities and general education students.
My students come to school each day with a thirst for knowledge and the need to feel successful.
These are children with attention deficits, speech and language issues, as well as, reading disorders. My students struggle, but they desperately want to learn. They want to understand and successfully apply their new skills.
My Project
The Lakeshore Learning Stem Bundle and headphones will open new doors for my students. The bundle will bring aspects of our reading curriculum alive by connecting the scientific texts to hands-on activities, like designing a house to withstanding an earthquake. The headphones will allow all types of learners access to the texts by listening to them on the computer. They will also be able to research a variety of scientific topics covered in the stem bundle and listen to those texts being read aloud to them. The headphone holders will allow the students to organize the headphones in an orderly way with no tangled wires.
Katherine Patterson once wrote, “It is not enough to simply teach children to read; we have to give them something worth reading.
Something that will stretch their imaginations-something that will help them make sense of their own lives and encourage them to reach out toward people whose lives are quite different from their own.” Help engage my students with hands-on activities and challenge them to become critical thinkers!
