My Students

LET THEM OUT - I am a huge advocate for finding more time in the school day for students to be outside. Our newly planted school garden will give students a chance to get back to nature and will allow students to grow their own food from seed and be involved in the whole process from farm to table.

Our school is located in high poverty area and we are around 60-70% free and reduced-price lunch.

Our students come from very diverse backgrounds; some have cell phones while others don't know where their next meal is coming from. We are mixed ethnicity with many ESL (English Second Language) students. We all come together to make one school. Our students have one thing in common, they are hungry for new opportunities at school and everyone wants to be involved in everything.

My Project

We will use the materials to grow our own plants from seed during the cooler months and through the spring for summer. The upside down tomato plants will show our students different methods of growing fruits and veggies and will add vertical growing to our garden. By growing our own plants we will eliminate the cost of purchasing plants from garden centers. This will also provide our students with the opportunity of seeing seeds grow in to plants and then provide edible fruit. The seed starter kits will also allow us to produce vegetable plants in mass to where students would be able to take plants home to start their own veggie gardens for their family. If we can grow more plants, we can provide more fresh fruits and vegetables. We could look to help to sustain our backpack program at school and reach our families that don't have access to a whole lot of food, especially fresh fruits and vegetables. These materials will definitely pay it forward and give back.

Gardening tools and starter seed kits will improve our sustainable learning garden by providing our students with the materials and opportunity to grow fresh fruits and vegetables year round.

The materials will give our school community a chance to reach more students and more families in need. The garden has many teachable components but ultimately it teaches life long learning and hopefully empowers to create a home garden supported by the school garden.
