My ninth grade English students are unique individuals that come from diverse backgrounds. As a low-income, high poverty urban school, my students arrive at our school from diverse backgrounds and circumstances. We have students who have come from approximately 30 different countries and speak at least 23 separate languages. They bring with them their own personalities, histories, and interests that help make our classroom community an energetic place. While my students face multitudes of hardships, their resiliency is inspiring and motivates me to work hard for them. Whether it is through more materials, unique learning experiences, or simple supports, my goal is to do whatever I can to support them.
What makes these students so amazing is their positive attitudes, motivation to improve, and the ability to use their differences as ways to teach each other.
Every year we work together towards group and individual goals to develop ourselves as better readers, writers, students, and humans. On paper, my job as their teacher is to provide them with the literary skills they need to be successful in our world, but I find that through our journey together it grows into so much more.
My Project
Each year I welcome over 120 students into my classroom and into high school for the first time. I have the privilege of watching them grow as young adults and develop academically. We work on everything from basic organizational skills to increasing reading levels to thinking critically. However, this is no easy feat and requires a lot of time, effort, and heart for everyone involved. One thing we consistently have to worry about is obtaining the supplies needed to be successful in class. With district budget cuts, the given supplies are scarce and with most students receiving free or reducesd price lunch, going to the store to buy a new binder or pencils adds unneeded stress to their already difficult daily lives.
All students deserve easy access to basic supplies for classroom success!
By donating to this project you are helping students start off the school year strong and with classroom resources we need to begin learning. Each student will receive a binder and dividers to help build an organized structure an keep track of their learning materials. The pens and pencils will be available for all students that either forget their own or simply cannot afford to obtain one. Dry erase markers and supplies will be used for daily instruction and group critical thinking activities. Flash cards will be used to help create and build study habits. Book marks and post it notes will be used for their own independent reading and habits. Lastly, snacks are needed to help students meet basic human needs before beginning instruction. For many it is difficult to focus and engage in a lesson when they have not yet eaten or if it has been a long time since their last meal.
