This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend 9th grade at my Public High School (the second oldest continuously operating school in the United States), which is a neighborhood school in Hartford, Connecticut. As a low-income/high poverty urban school, my students arrive at our school from diverse backgrounds and circumstances. We have students who have come from approximately 30 different countries and speak at least 23 separate languages. The majority of our students receive free and reduced lunch, however we also have students who have chosen to travel from the suburbs to attend our school. Our school has one of the highest Special Education populations in our city and many students need extra supports to be successful. We work hard each year to prepare our students to be college or career ready, since many of our students will be first generation college students.

My Project

My project is designed to help our 9th graders feel welcomed to our high school as they transition from their smaller middle school settings to our much larger high school building. We have found that the success of students in 9th grade has a significant influence on whether our students achieve an on-time graduation four years later, so we are putting together new programming to make a concerted effort to make every one of our freshman feel welcomed and that they have an important role to play at our school.

One of our strategies is to provide each student with a Freshman Success Starter Kit.

My teammates and I are partnering up to create these Success Starter Kits for our students. Included in these Kits will be 3 ring binders and pencils for each student. We are planning to work on strengthening our student’s organizational skills, class preparation, and overall good student habits and want to make sure that all of our students have the appropriate materials. While some of our students have access basic school supplies, some of our students do not and we would like to make sure the starting playing field is even for every student.

We are planning on giving out these Success Starter Kits during the first few days of school during our first annual Welcome Week programming we have developed. We know our students will truly appreciate these new supplies and the warm welcome to our high school!
