Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is a small transfer school, founded to serve overage, under-credited 8th graders who have been held back two or more years; this means they are entering high school at 16. Many of these students are disengaged, have had various obstacles and challenges in their lives, including but not limited to homelessness, food insecurity, having children, etc.

My school provides full wrap-around services for the students and their families to ensure the social-emotional and academic needs are met, however, there is more that can be done inside the classroom to re-engage students who struggle.

Over the past three years, our school has seen an influx of international students, so that our school now has a 60% English Language Learner population, and a number of these students have had interrupted education. This means that not only do the students have to succeed academically but learn a new language in order to be college and career ready, as well as pass the English regents, which is only in English.

Our belief is that every child is capable and in this capacity, every student at our school will take at least one Advanced Placement course during their time at our school.

My Project

Students have been provided tablets, but there have been struggles as students try to navigate multiple tabs and windows while to complete their work, and at time entire assignments have been erased. A wireless keyboard provides students the opportunity to scroll and navigate their tablet in a more functional manner. Students are then able to write more and in a streamlined manner providing them the opportunity for more authentic learning. Instead of tapping a screen and getting frustrated when mistakes happen, real time learning can take place as students connect their tablet to their keyboards.
