My Project

One of our goals in music is for kids to be able to form connections. In 5th grade, I would like to be able to teach kids basic piano skills so that they can connect with music lots of ways.

One way kids will be able to connect with music is by taking all of the skills we have been working on from kindergarten on up and applying them to learning piano.

Kids learn basic rhythm skills and note reading skills in elementary music class. We have been able to apply them to playing bells and recorder, but being able to use them on a piano will give them more motivation and excitement.

Another connection I would like kids to make will be through being able to play a little of their favorite songs on the piano. Many of the songs we learn in elementary music are very basic folk songs. Kids see that they can use the piano to play a popular piece of music using skills that we have been working on for years.

The students at our elementary school are very diverse. We have kids from over 30 different countries. Music as a part of our culture is something that all of us have in common. I have been able to find melodies from different cultures that kids can share with each other.
