This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have the honor of being a Fourth grade ELA teacher in the District of Columbia public schools. Our students are kind, hard-working, humorous, and energetic. Many of our students come to school being survivors of trauma. Their resiliency is awe inspiring. About half of our student population are English language learners and 99% of our student population receives free or reduced-price lunch.

Our students are creative and clever scholars who have all the potential in the world and a whole school of adults supporting them in their efforts to succeed.

Our students have lived through some unfortunate and unimaginable hardships. But, it is our responsibility as educators to provide them a world-class education from the moment they step in the door. We strive to instill independence, self-efficacy, self-esteem and strategic thinking in every student.

My Project

My students have tremendously benefitted from the generously donated keyboards from my first project. As our number of iPads have grown we have needed some more keyboards. Keyboards have allowed my students to tackle writing in new ways and having given voice to the once silenced. Students are excited to go through the writing process and work on multiple drafts with the element of typing. With the generous donation of keyboards students will be able to continue to type essays, access online literacy programs, and excel at the ever changing online landscape of the digital world. Thank you for making my students world a little larger than Washington D.C.
