Our classroom motto is "I can do anything. I can learn anything. I can be anything." As part of a high needs urban district, it is easy for the Arts to be forgotten in the midst of academic assessments. Music inspires and reminds my students they can become anything they want beyond the assessments.
My students are part of a high needs urban district.
Even with the challenges they face, many of our students are still excited to learn about music and are inspired to learn how to create their own. Music is often referred to as an experience they use to emote feelings and reduce stress. The students I teach are Grades K-5. As our youngest learners, their early education lays the foundation for future teachings. Our school is working very hard to create a strong music program. As the students continue to grow, it is my job to grow with them and continue to inspire them through music. I want to provide them with experiences they may not find anywhere else. I want these experiences to be ones they carry with them throughout their lives.
My Project
My students will be able to read music and perform songs on the keyboards. They will become strong music readers and be able to apply all their skills from the keyboard to other instruments and musical experiences. They will be able to practice throughout the school year and have extensive performing opportunities in order to share our music with our community. With large class sizes and small rooms, often times we don't have enough instruments in the general music classroom to create more "doing" opportunities. I spend the majority of my year incorporating notation and music reading into my curriculum. We sing most of the exercises, but I would like to put a pitched-instrument in their hands and create more application experiences. They constantly ask for instruments and when they will be able to learn new ones. With all the pressures of core curriculum testing, I want music to be an exciting and fun learning experience they can carry with them throughout life.
The donations to this project will improve our classroom by providing the students with the opportunity to learn how to play Piano.
I always tell my students when we perform together, we become a family. Students come to music looking for an outlet and a place in which they feel safe to learn and explore. We sing together, play together, perform together and we learn how to work as a team. We applaud each other, support each other, and encourage each other.
