We are in the age of Technology and my students need access to technology so they can keep up.
I teach an amazing group of students.
My class is a Kindergarten through 5th grade special needs class. We are part of a Leader in Me Elementary school along the rural Gulf Coast of Alabama. The disabilities in my classroom include Autism, Developmental Delay, Traumatic Brain Injury, Orthopedic Impairment, Visual Impairment, and Other Health Impairment. Despite everything my students have to overcome they are making so much progress and love school.
My Project
I recently attended the Handwriting without Tears workshop and they introduced us to their Keyboarding without Tears component to teach keyboarding skills in a developmentally appropriate way. I fell in love with what they showed me and ordered both the handwriting and keyboarding programs for my students. Now I just need computers so they can actually use the curriculum I purchased. We currently only have 1 chromebook that was previously donated. It is recommended that the students spend 15 minutes a day each on the program. So, in order to implement the program as directed to give my students the best opportunity to learn they need more computer access.
Knowing how to type and use a computer or tablet is practically a must in today's world.
Keyboarding is a very essential skill to learn. For some of my students with physical limitations or the inability to speak technology can be life changing for them and a way to overcome their disabilities if only given the opportunity.
