This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a group of passionate and eager sixth, seventh, and eighth graders from Washington Heights, NYC. Eighteen percent of my students are English Language Learners, 24% of my students are designated as having special learning needs, and 86% of my students qualify for the free or reduced-price lunch program. At my school, art class in the past has been offered as a small group class to a select number of students, but I am very excited that this year every middle school student will be taking my class (all 300 of them!).

My students are the sweetest, most kind-hearted children, who genuinely enjoy and seek out opportunities to be creative.

Pablo Picasso was once quoted as saying “Every child is an artist.”, and my students definitely prove him right. For many of my students art class is a really special place, where they get to be creative, play, and explore with materials. Especially at a time like right now, where many of my students have been stuck at home, creating and art making is an escape and a lifeline.

My Project

My goal for this year is to provide every single one of my students the tools they need to find personal, artistic, and academic success, no matter what curveballs the pandemic may throw us. I am committed to this goal, and to standing by my students and fighting for what they deserve. It is no question that this pandemic has highlighted huge inequities in communities and schools, especially in schools that serve students of color.

The biggest challenge I faced last semester during school closure was the sudden lack of equity of, and access to, art supplies for my student artists.

Without access to many basic art supplies my students struggled to stay engaged in creating and learning, and some were unable to participate at all - it honestly broke my heart. My dream for this coming year, is that all my students will have access to the tools they need to express themselves and truly enjoy creating. My dream is to restore the lifeline that my class is for so many students. I know with access to supplies my students will thrive, not just as artists, but as individuals as well.

I can't do this without your help. For less than $20 per student ($19.71 per student actually), you will be providing a comprehensive kit of essential art making supplies that will enrich a student artist for the entire year. I have chosen these supplies very carefully to make sure they maximize the amount of art making students will be able to do over the course of the year, the Canson XL Mix Media sketchbook for example, has heavyweight paper that students can use for both drawing, painting projects, and mixed media work! Thank you for reading or sharing this campaign, and for considering donating to our cause.
