Keiki Voices Through Books, Art, and Aloha

Help my students explore through Hawaiian stories, inclusive art materials, and May Day celebration supplies that honor all voices in our community.

My Project

In our Hawai‘i kindergarten classroom, we believe in building a space where every child feels seen, valued, and proud of who they are. Our keiki come from richly diverse backgrounds. However, our classroom resources don’t always reflect these beautiful identities or the local culture we live in.

This project focuses on racial justice and representation, helping students see themselves and each other in the books they read, the crayons they color with, and the cultural traditions they practice—like May Day, our special celebration of aloha, hula, and ʻohana.

We are requesting:

-Children’s books rooted in Hawaiian stories and culture, so students can learn local mo‘olelo (stories) and values from an early age.

-Skin-tone crayons (like Crayola's Colors of the World), so our keiki can draw themselves and their peers in a way that reflects real-world diversity.

- Lei-making materials (yarn, plastic needles, paper or silk flowers) so children can participate in this important May Day tradition with intention and joy.

- T-shirts for students to wear for our May Day hula performance, building pride and unity as they share their culture with families.

These supplies will allow students to explore who they are, where they come from, and how they can show respect and love for others. Through Hawaiian books, keiki will learn local values like aloha, mālama, and kuleana. With art and hands-on cultural activities, they’ll experience representation in action.

Racial justice begins with affirming identity and celebrating differences. This project helps our youngest learners develop empathy, self-confidence, and cultural pride.

Mahalo nui loa for supporting a classroom where every child feels empowered to stand tall in who they are—and dance, draw, and learn with aloha.
