Students in my classroom come from fifteen different Native American tribes in South Dakota, North Dakota, and Nebraska. They live nine months of every year at school, with little to no contact with their families. They come from a variety of home lives but come to school with the hope of a brighter future. Many of my students have become accustomed to not having the newest resources or technology, but they still persevere.
Within a few months of being in my classroom, they learn that they can achieve things that many thought they never would.
They are reading harder books (sometimes even their first chapter book), doing harder math problems, and are able to do their own research on things that interest them.
My Project
Our campus is unlike most elementary campuses in South Dakota. Every time my students leave our classroom they are outside in the winter elements. Most students don't have their own hats and gloves and therefore are provided with thin hats and gloves which aren't warm enough for the subzero temperatures we face every year.
My students need warmer hats, mittens, and face masks to keep them safe from the winter elements when they are outside going from class to class.
During one of our recent cold blasts I brought in handkerchiefs for students to tie around their faces. While this thin fabric was better than nothing, it wasn't enough when the windchill was nearly 30 degrees below zero. Please help me to provide my students with the proper winter attire!
