My Students
My students come from a high-poverty low-income community. They live in the poorest county of New Jersey. Some of my students' parents work two to three jobs to take care of the bare necessities of everyday life. While their parents want the very best for them, the extra things in life may not be able to be provided. About seventy-five percent of my students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch and cannot readily afford materials to help enhance their education.
My students have faced many challenges in their young lives where school tends to be their only constant.
In our first grade classroom, we like to keep things exciting. There are a lot of important skills that my first graders need to master before they are ready for second grade. They love working with each other and learning new things!
My Project
Trying to focus on a task when cold can be difficult for anyone, but especially a young child. The rooms in our building can vary greatly in temperature, especially during the winter months. Students may wear navy blue sweaters, but sometimes a student doesn't have a clean one, or outgrows one. To keep warm, they will come to school in a sweatshirt or sweater that does not adhere to our dress code or even worse, no sweater at all!
Being able to provide students a sweater to loan in school or in our room will allow students to stay warm while adhering to the dress code, making for a more comfortable learning environment.
Students with insufficient funding or housing options would be able to wear items based on fit and their own preferences as opposed to cost. Staying warm and having a sweater that fits will prevent an unnecessary distraction and allow students to focus on their academics.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
