My Students

Mark Twain said “News is history in its first and best form, its vivid and fascinating form.” No social studies classroom is complete unless the past is applied to the present in order to help us understand the future.

My students are 6th, 7th, and 8th graders in an urban school system in Maryland.

My students are amazing. They are energetic and enthusiastic about school and curious about the world around them. They constantly come to me with questions about things they have seen or heard on the news. Our school is a positive and safe environment where students know they are going to learn and that their teachers care about them.

My Project

With the Current Event readers my students will be able to read more in depth about the types of issues that affect the world they live in. This will enable them to become more informed and more connected to the world outside their neighborhood. The Current Event readers will give us a common text to draw information from. Using the common text we will then be able to discuss the current event as informed citizens of the world. Furthermore, it will enable us to sharpen our debating skills by proving us with current issues to debate.

My students are curious about the world around them.

They are not always able to explore that world first hand but with these Current Event readers, they will be able to hear about the world around them in a meaningful and important way. They will be connected to the world through the stories and article they read. It will increase their critical thinking skills by giving us a current event to discuss and/or debate. It will help my students expand their knowledge.
