Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Remember when people read newspapers while eating their breakfast? Well, I want to give my students the chance to have that experience. In our school district, we have breakfast in the classroom. I want to provide Times for Kids magazines to each student so that they can read them while eating.

My school is located in a working-class, inner-city neighborhood of Los Angeles and many of my students come from low-income households.

This year, I will be teaching 4th grade students. Many of my students are English Language Learners. Many of my students have parents who work multiple jobs and struggle to meet the everyday needs of their children, such as providing regular meals or a consistent bedtime. Many parents struggle simply to help their children with completing daily homework assignments. Yet, the children are eager to learn and come to school every day with positive attitudes, ready to build on the knowledge they have gained over time. 4th grade is when students are considered upper elementary. I want to provide them with experiences that will help them feel more mature. And, I want them to see reading as a natural activity for every part of their day.

My Project

Every morning, my students will be provided with breakfast in the classroom and they will also be expected to read during this time. In order to maintain the routine yet break the monotony, I envision students feeling excited when the new issue of their Times for Kids magazine arrives and is distributed. As part of the Common Core Standards, they must analyze informative text structures. This activity will help students feel more comfortable (less intimidated) by the features of informative text. As English Languages Learners, my students also need to be able to talk about what they read. In the informal setting of breakfast in the classroom, I see students talking to each other about what they are reading. Finally, I plan to use a set of the magazines for small group intervention for close reading activities. Since these issues can be written on, they can be used to practice annotating text and for cut and paste activities.

Supporting this project will provide students with informative text in a more accessible format.

Reading a Time for Kids magazine in a breakfast in the classroom setting will give my students that experience. I want my students to embrace reading as an everyday activity that can be enjoyable. My ultimate goal is for students to learn to read for pleasure!
