Keeping Up With Keena Ford!

Help me give my students better questioning, comprehension, fluency, and discussion skills through a whole grade read aloud unit of Keena Ford and the Second Grade Mix-Up!

My Students

The students I have the pleasure to teach are some of the most passionate, sweetest, exuberant kids you will ever meet! Many of them are also students who have faced many hardships in life and will continue to face many hardships. Our school is a Title I school serving low-income students from all over the city of Nashville, TN. Many students come to our school without ever having been in a Pre-K program of any type. Therefore, some of them are often lacking in skills that perhaps their same-aged, higher income peers have already mastered. Our school is determined to make sure that by the time our students leave our school in 8th grade, they are caught up and on the path to college success. College and life success depends on creating students who are life-long learners and lovers of gaining knowledge!

I truly hope that in my school all of my students feel the excitement that comes from gaining knowledge and discovering something new every day!

My Project

We are trying something new this year with second grade - we are doing a high-interest book based around journal entries unit to really turn our students onto reading. As part of this unit, it would be wonderful to provide each student with their own copy of our read-aloud book, "Keena Ford and The Second Grade Mix-Up" by Melissa Thomson, to be able to read along with and markup - just as true readers do!

If this unit is successful, I would love to provide personal books to my students from one unit, each year to help them build their home libraries.

There is nothing better than reading a well-loved book at night cozy in bed and I would like to give this experience to my students! I am so excited to start our year off with a wonderful whole class read aloud that my students can really connect to1
