My students need age appropriate periodicals and non-fiction biographies to help further their understanding. They also need stools to sit on for our discussion and writers workshops.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am privileged and honored to teach at a school that is the first of it's kind in Dallas ISD. We are a public Montessori and a school of choice. We were born out of community desire to provide an alternate, free option for families that didn't have choices. We occupy what used to be a severely under utilized facility and we are now at capacity with a waiting list of more than 300.
The students I serve come from all walks of life and from every background imaginable.
I have 13 boys and 9 girls and they range in age from 6 - 9 years old. We are lucky to have a very active community and the school truly feels like an extension of family.
My Project
With the state of our country in such turmoil, I feel more passionately than ever that we have to educate our children about the history of our great nation. Not only do they need to know and understand the events in our past, but they must also begin to understand how our past effects our future. I teach in a mixed age classroom with children from 6-9. I strive to expose them to current events in an age appropriate way touching on subjects that are important but sensitive. For this reason, I love the Scholastic magazine. Not only is it age appropriate, but it is high interest. Our school was not able to renew our subscription last year and they really missed it. It is more important than ever that we teach this generation to be a voice of change and to stand up for the injustices in our country and the world. I am also including the "Who am I" series because these are great books for students to extend their research. Many times after reading an article they are curious to know more about a particular historical figure or a historical event.
I love to see a child's eyes light up when you have sparked an interest in them.
When you reach a child like that, they want to delve into that subject deeply. These magazines and periodicals give the kiddos current, important and timely subjects to choose from.
I have also asked for stools. Stools you ask? How does that have to do with history, current events and discussion? Everything! We are in a Montessori classroom so we do not have the traditional set-up of tables and chairs. The stools allow us to move into circles and discuss face to face. It is easy and accessible seating!
