My students need 30 copies of Weekly Reader current events magazines. We will be discussing current events every week. My students will also be using the magazine to research the candidate platforms and learn about the election process.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach social studies in a middle school with students who are often reading below grade level, therefore reading local or national newspapers are often intimidating to them. My students unfortunately do not keep up with current events.
Learning current events is an integral part of social studies because students make connections to the past (and better understand why we learn it). Current events will be part of the curriculum every week. This year, news of the election will be everywhere. I want my students to understand the election process and the candidates themselves.
Weekly reader is a kid friendly magazine that will help my students learn about current events without frustrating them. I want my students to grow up to be citizens who make informed decisions in the voting booth. They will be working on a project in which they will research the issues discussed in the news, debate, and finally vote for president themselves in a school-wide election. In addition, students will be making weekly reports on the national election.
You will make it possible for my students to have a resource for learning current events that they can understand, take home, and interact with. You will provide our students a stepping stone to becoming the educated and informed citizens we need for the future.
