My Students

My students come from a high-poverty low-income community. They live in the poorest county of New Jersey. Some of my students' parents work two to three jobs to take care of the bare necessities of everyday life. While their parents want the very best for them, the extra things in life may not be able to be provided. About seventy-five percent of my students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch and cannot readily afford materials to help enhance their education.

My students have faced many challenges in their young lives where school tends to be their only constant.

In our first grade classroom, we like to keep things exciting. There are a lot of important skills that my first graders need to master before they are ready for second grade. They love working with each other and learning new things!

My Project

Pencils and crayons are a hot commodity in an elementary classroom. Pencil points break easily while students are hard at work solving math problems. Students using manual hand sharpeners takes time away from their learning and usually ends up with pencil shavings everywhere.

Crayons become dull as students are creating pictures to make their stories come alive.

Unless you have a special sharpener for your crayons, those crayons remain dull and difficult for students to create the pictures they have in mind.

Let's fix this for them! Electric pencil and crayon sharpeners are time savers! Students will be able to keep their writing tools sharp and ready for their next learning adventure!
