An inquisitive bunch of experimenters is how I describe my students at a small charter school in Oakland. This is the first year that my 9th graders would attend school in-person since they entered middle school in the 7th grade, and my 11th graders since they entered high school in the 9th grade. I am asking for your help to allow me to meet their social, emotional, and other physiological learning needs by helping me provide them with snacks, games, and other supplies that let them know I care about them.
With a diverse group of student body, from the highly-motivated, college-bound ones to the working student-athletes and students with a variety of special needs, all my students are excited to be back in the classroom.
I would love for them to have multiple "a-ha moments" as they connect the theoretical and molecular with the hands-on laboratory activities designed to make science more accessible to every and all types of learners. In order for them to do that, their physiological needs must be met.
My Project
With the new omicron variant, we are asked to mask up. However if our students do not have the masks that fit them well, their masks will continuously fall below their noses and it would be uncomfortable for them. I'm thinking that for some students, wearing balaclavas on top of their surgical/cloth masks will help them keep their masks up. I have also asked for N95 masks to have supplies.
With this project, I am focused on taking care of the whole child by keeping them warm, fed, and happy.
We know that our students can't learn if their physiological needs are not met.
In addition to thinking about the virus, I would also like to provide my students some warmth since we have to keep our windows open for ventilation. Thus, the handwarmers. I am also adding something fun for them to do where they get to connect with each other by asking for board games. And the snacks are a great way to keep them going.
