Keeping Students Safe in Science

My Students

Do you remember the first time you were in a real science classroom lab "doing" science? Students can learn so much more from actually carrying out an investigation as opposed to just watching someone else do it for them.

I teach science to seventh grade students in a South Carolina public school.

It is my honor and privilege to teach these students. They are great group of learners representing virtually every ethnic background. They come from many different backgrounds, and many of them live in poverty. The academic diversity of these students spans from learning disabled to gifted and talented. These students deserve the very best science education possible.

My Project

Students in my science classes participate in lab investigations two to three times a week including several dissection labs. With the budget cuts our schools are experiencing, our supplies are extremely limited. We have a great need for student safety equipment. We only have enough lab aprons for 1 out of every 7 students and our supply of disposable gloves was completely depleted last year. As a result we are faced with the decision of whether or not our students will be able to experience many of the basic lab investigations that are normally a part of the science curriculum. Without appropriate lab safety gear, many investigations the students would benefit from will be carried out as demonstrations instead. My students were so very disappointed when I had to inform them that they may not be able to dissect this year. I am sure you can imagine how frustrating it is to these young people to have the excitement of DOING science taken away.
