Keeping Students Focused and Their Belongings Secure With Solid Shelves
Help me give my students study shelves for their belongings so they do not need to leave their things on the floor, and they can have clear classroom aisles and fewer distractions at their seats.

My Students
With our school located on an army airfield in Hawaii, our students come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Not only do we have students from across the US, we have students from other countries as well as local students from the most ethnically diverse state in the country. This unique environment allows our students to learn so much with, about, and from each other.
Despite a multitude of academic and personal challenges, our students work hard and persevere.
Many of them are part of military families who are often moving, come from less-fortunate homes with financial challenges or struggle with learning disabilities. Still, our students remain kind, capable and interested in learning.
My Project
For years, our class has followed a system where students take what they need from their bags when they enter and leave their bags on the floor in a designated area. The reason for this is to keep the aisles of the classroom clear (even more important now that the pandemic has necessitated special spacing requirements for desks), and to prevent students from being distracted (by digging through their bags for papers, trying to check their phones, etc.). I've placed carpet runners in those areas to help a bit, but sometimes their things get jumbled, kicked or stepped on, don't fit, or get dirty. I have always wanted to provide them with these low shelves so they could use the vertical space, protect their items, and still keep things out of the way. I am hopeful that this can now become a reality!
