Help me give my students the ability to have a hands-on learning tool inside my classroom. Biology, Chemistry, Ecology, and Physics are just a few of the sciences involved in aquarium keeping.
The students in my science classroom come from a wide variety of backgrounds. We are an alternative high school that supports grades 9-12. My students are taking either Biology, Physical Science, or Earth Science. My students are from low income backgrounds. Most of them have never had the chance to learn in a setting that has a beautiful aquarium.
Often, students in an alternative school need a non-traditional (or alternative) way of learning.
Traditional school may not have worked for them, and I try to provide as many different ways of instruction as I can. I want to see the students engaged in their learning, and strive to give them as many hands-on, real-life science experiences as I can.
My Project
Having a classroom aquarium will enrich the lives of students by giving them a hands-on science experience. We will learn how to care for many different types of fish. We will learn how to maintain a clean habitat for the fish by using the aquarium test strips to test the water daily, we will learn about different types of fish food, and different types of plants that exist in an aquarium. We will address the daily needs of the aquarium by creating a realistic habitat for marine animals using the ammonia remover, the Proper Ph 7.5, the API ALGAEFIX Algae Control Solution, and Aqueon Water Clarifier. My students will also clean the aquarium using the Aqueon Medium Siphon Vacuum Aquarium Gravel Cleaner, the Marineland Rite-Size A Cartridge Refills, and MarineLand - Bio-Wheel. The aquarium will be a wonderful addition to my class of lifelong learners.
An aquarium will also foster responsibility, build a connection to the classroom, serve as a motivator, and be something for my students to love.
By having an aquarium in the classroom, the students will be able to compare and contrast aquarium habitats with natural marine habitats, discuss potential problems that arise when marine animals are kept in aquariums, and learn various responsibilities. Having a classroom aquarium will have a broad impact on student learning. Your donation will make a huge impact on my super scientists for years to come!
