My Students
I have been teaching kindergarten for 29 years in an amazing school, which is located in a low income community. Despite the often sad circumstances some of my students face, they are beating the odds every day. My students are bright, friendly, and extremely eager to learn new things. They love to explore and learn through play and hands-on experiences, which is the way it should be for a group of 5 and 6-year-olds.
With the current trend being all about test scores and less about letting kids be kids, I feel it is my duty to make learning as meaningful and engaging as I can for my students, while also making it fun!
My Project
Since we are starting our school year off with in-person face to face instruction, I think it is important for my kindergarten students to keep their germs to themselves as much as possible. Besides wearing masks, having an automatic hand sanitizer dispenser right in our classroom will make it much easier to do that. I will feel much safer with the kids touching and sharing books, game pieces and manipulatives if they have used hand sanitizer first.
Every year, Pete the Cat becomes THE favorite storybook character in my classroom.
I was so excited to find these Pete the Cat books that go along with the themes that we learn about in our Tools of the Mind play-based curriculum. My students will love to listen to these books about Pete going into outer space, becoming a pirate, and a knight in Medieval times. The puzzles will correspond with some of our other themes including oceans, dinosaurs, and African savannahs. My students will absolutely love all of these materials.
