I am a speech pathologist who works with students with disabilities. I work with students ranging in age from birth through 21.
My students are sometimes in Special Education their entire school career, and at times it can be challenging to keep them eager to learn.
We are in a small town where students don't always get the opportunity to be exposed to a variety of possible career paths--so we bring those opportunities to the classroom. The students are very responsive to learning when it does not look like work.
My Project
Keeping students engaged as middle and high schoolers can be a challenge. Keeping these children motivated when learning does not come easily is even more of a challenge.
Using high-interest materials like LEGOs or games that do not look juvenile are key to helping older students learn age-appropriate skills at their own level.
These sets of LEGO figurines will help my students to learn about members of the community including careers, roles/responsibilities, and community resources. The game will improve my students' vocabulary skills in a well-received format. By supporting this project you will be helping to fulfill the ultimate goal of education: to prepare students to be productive members of our community.
