This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from an area where some do not have the basic necessities to start their day off right. Some are coming from shelters, others are sleeping in a different bed every night and struggle to keep a roof over their head. We are hoping to provide them with some snacks to fill their bellies and hats and gloves to keep them warm in those cold winter months.
My class is a class of 25 kindergartners with unique personalities and varying academic levels ranging from kindergarten to second grade.
We are a kindergarten ICT class, 40% special education students and 60% regular education students. My students are part of a larger school community of about 700 students. Compared to other New York City Schools, we are much smaller. While our small size has a lot of pros there are also many cons; one being the lack of space that our school has along with a smaller budget. While we try to use our budget wisely providing a great number of resources for our students, we often do not have many of the things that we need to help all our students be successful.
My Project
Remember when you would go to Kindergarten in the morning and get to go home at lunchtime? The days of half-day Kindergarten are over, and Kindergartners now attend school all day. Some come to school hungry, while others come to school in the bitter winter cold without a hat or gloves. Kindergartners face the challenge of staying engaged and on-task during a long, full school day.
If their day does not start off right, for many it is difficult to learn.
It is very difficult to stay focused on learning when you have an empty stomach.
We are requesting snacks such as crackers, fruit snacks, chips, granola bars and goldfish that will provide many nutrients and minerals that a growing Kindergartner needs between meals.
Some of our students who do not have permanent housing also do not have the basic necessities for keeping warm and having a snack after school. The items we have requested will be sent home with the children who do not have a snack to eat and those who do not have a warm hat or gloves. Please help us get snacks for the classroom!
