Take your mind back to your early elementary years. Do you remember when your teacher(s) would give you a Weekly Reader or a copy of Jack & Jill for you to keep as your own? That is the experience I desire for my kindergarten students.
The students I educate come from high poverty areas in the northeast part of our metropolitan city.
They come to school each with a variety of needs ranging from hunger to sleep deprivation to a strong desire to learn. Our school's population is at least 88% economically disadvantaged.
My Project
Having Weekly Reader with Science allows the students to learn about world events and science as an extension of the standard curriculum. Students will be given their own copy to read as well as complete hands-on activities. The Science connection will also provide additional information about earth, life, and physical science enabling them to expand their knowledge of science. Kindergarten students will be able to take the leaflet home each week to share what they have learned.
By contributing to this grant, you will be providing an additional educational resource for keeping students in touch with the world and the ever-changing field of science.
With this additional information, they will be able to share the knowledge with their families.
