My Project
My students are incredibly resilient, caring, and full of potential—but many face daily challenges that no young person should have to navigate just to make it through the school day.
While Co-op City’s poverty rate is lower than the Bronx average, it's still significantly higher than the national average.
We’re part of NYC-Bronx Community District 10, where over 14% of residents live below the poverty line. These numbers show up in my classroom in very real ways: students coming to school hungry, without hygiene products, tissues, clean clothes, or even water.
Throughout the school year, I’ve kept a care closet in my classroom stocked with essentials like deodorant, sanitary products, snacks, extra clothing, and water. When that closet is full, I see the difference—students attend more regularly, stay in class, and are able to focus. They know they can come to school and have what they need to take care of themselves with dignity.
But by the end of the year, I had run out. I was completely out of sanitary items and deodorant. Tissues were gone two weeks before school ended. Students kept asking for food, water, and a place to heat meals—but I didn’t have the resources to provide them.
This project will help restock my care closet with the most-needed items:
hygiene supplies
tissues
nonperishable food
bottled water
weather-protective gear
spare clothing
When students know their needs will be met, they stop roaming the halls and start showing up—physically and emotionally—in the classroom. Your donation helps make school a place where every student feels safe, supported, and ready to learn.
