The students who attend our school are some of the most amazing children I have ever met. They live in one of the most dangerous communities in our nation's capital. They attend a Title I school where 100% of the population receives free lunch. Every day, they walk down a hill to school where they are able to escape the violence that riddles their neighborhood and receive not only a great education, but get the opportunity to participate in the school's drum line.
For the students who participate in the school's drum line, it provides them with an extracurricular activity that not only keeps them out of trouble, but sets them up to participate in the drum line in middle and high school.
Despite all of the challenges students face outside the school walls, they still come to school each day ready, excited to learn and be part of the drum line.
My Project
The drum heads we are requesting will go to replace the worn and tattered drum heads that students have been using for the past 4 years. Each week, drums are being taken out of use because the drum head is beyond usable. This means that one by one, students are unable to participate in the drum line that they so desperately love.
With these drum heads, we will be able to replace the heads on 9 drums which will allow 9 more students to be able to play.
This means these students will be set up for success and have the skills needed to participate in the music program when they get to middle and high school. It will also provide students with an opportunity for a constructive and safe activity for 2 hours after school each day.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
