My Students

The students at our school run the gamut of ethnic backgrounds and socioeconomic status (mostly lower), which brings with it many challenges. We also have all levels of reading, math, and science abilities, so we try to do as many hands-on activities as we can, supporting lessons with literacy and explicit teaching of content. Science teachers have been charged with new NGSS standards and are given no budget with which to carry them out. In other words, each grade in our school (6th, 7th,and 8th) is required to teach several science units that are new to us, with no additional equipment or supplies.

The majority of our students do not come from homes where they have opportunities for academic enrichment, so they depend on school for all of their science training.

We want to level the playing field between ours and other more affluent, academically advanced schools, by giving our students opportunities to grasp and internalize concepts using hands-on manipulatives and active learning.

My Project

My project is designed to upgrade my classroom with multiple hands-on STEM models and items to simulate real-life biological processes and organisms. I want to offer students diverse types of evidence from which to make observations and expand their knowledge.

Students will handle models of human organs, view and label microscopic slides of preserved plant and animal cells, and study and draw conclusions about the processes of life in organisms all around them.

We will draw conclusions about how all life on Earth and in the universe affect and interact with one another.
