The students that I teach are between 10th and 12th grade. The students in my class have a clinical diagnosis of Severe Emotional disturbance. They are in a single classroom all day because they have a hard time interacting with other peers and adults. I am entering my 6th year as an ED teacher, and they are the most inspirational students I know. They all have hardships at home. Their lives are filled with poverty, drugs, gangs, and myself, who thinks the world of them. I will have these students for the next one to three years, so they will benefit from these supplies for a long time. Our school is a career tech high school, and all of our students are being educated to be career and college ready.
Typically my students are referred to as the "Bad Student" and that is the farthest from the truth.
They just need someone on their side. In our class, we have created that space for our students. Now they feel comfortable with us, we want to give them the same opportunity as their peers. We believe in them.
My Project
Recent test results show that students are performing below grade level in and are struggling to pass our Ohio state test. These manipulatives will allow them to have hands-on learning. Studies show that students learn when they become responsible for their own learning. Think about the student who can use these manipulatives to grasp a math concept or to problem solve, then use them to explain the concept to a friend! These math manipulatives will provide not only the foundation to many math concepts, but allow students to explore and expand their knowledge for higher order of thinking. The use of manipulatives in teaching mathematics has a long tradition and rich solid research history.
Traditionally math is a subject that students become overwhelmed and shut down and withdraw from a lesson.
Being an Intervention Specialist, teaching and providing the opportunity to allow them to self-regulate and refocus on a lesson is crucial. Math and a student’s mindset are a critical need area for my class, and these manipulatives are just the thing to help get my students on the right track.
