This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our transition program has students from all parts of a large city in the North East. They are 18-22 years of age and all are looking to become more independent by attending our program. We take them out to work in the community, we give them opportunities to participate in volunteering at a foodbank and a dog rescue, and we have in-school jobs that teach them skills such as housekeeping, recycling and office work. One of the most important independent living skills we can teach these students are cooking skills. In order to teach them cooking skills, the program needs its own refrigerator.
We have the young adults participate in cooking skills, which include finding a recipe, making a shopping list, shopping and following a recipe as well as cleaning up after the cooking is done.
The program did have a donated refrigerator but it has stopped working. This means that we cannot keep fresh food for the students to cook. Fresh food is a very important aspect of our lessons in the program as healthy living lessons are infused in almost every aspect of independent living skills.
We need a very basic refrigerator, one with the most room and the least amount of bells and whistles. We need a place to put our fresh food and ingredients so the young adults can get those independent living skills which are so important to living a helathy lifestyle.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
