Keeping Focused with Headphones

My students need headphones to use during computer lab time in order to stay focused on the task at hand.

My Students

Have you ever tried to concentrate, but there was too much noise around you? That is what it is like for my 23 kindergarten students when we visit the computer lab. My students need headphones so they can concentrate and listen to what is on their computer in front of them.

I teach at a Title One school in Indiana.

The majority of our school population is part of the free or reduced lunch program. I have 23 very energetic kindergarten students in my class this year. They are very eager to learn, and I am excited for what this year will bring. Many of my students do not have a home computer, or access to technology. Our computer time is special for them. I want them to have the opportunity to utilize this time to the fullest.

My Project

We visited the computer lab for the first time this week, and the students loved it. However, many were distracted by the other computer sounds. Having a class set of headphones would allow my students to focus on their activities on the computer without being distracted by the noises from the other 22 computers in the lab. Almost all of the programs we utilize in the computer lab have sound, whether it be music or the reading of a story. In order to get the most out of our time, and to have optimal educational benefit, my students need to be able focus on the sounds that are coming from their own computer.

A class set of headphones would allow my students a great educational benefit by helping them focus on only their sound from the computer.

My students can be easily distracted, so by letting each student have they own set of headphones, they will be able to focus more intently on the activity on the computer screen.
