This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach third grade at a Title I, inner-city elementary school. The school population is 75% Hispanic and 25% African-American. 100% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch.
Our inner-city school is exposed to many fast food restaurants and very few good examples of living a healthy life.
The staff at the school works hard to instill healthy living, but it has been hard due to lack of equipment to help motivate our students to make wise choices either with regards to food or exercise.
My Project
My students brainstormed ways to help them keep active and fit both at home and school. One of the problems they had was determining how much exercise they should get each day. If they played 20 minutes of basketball, was that the same as 10 min of running around the track? They came up with the idea of obtaining a fitness tracker where they could track their activity online and make a competition of it for those who were a bit more competitive.
My students learned how inactivity can negatively affect their bodies and they didn't want that to happen to them.
They wanted to be healthy and " live a long time so that they could be that old person who still rides a skateboard down the street." It was decided that they needed to put a plan into action. The fitness tracker is the first part of that plan.
I would like to obtain the fitness trackers for them so that they will easily see that it doesn't take playing sports in order to be active and fit. Not all of my students like to engage in sports, so having the trackers will show them that it doesn't take playing sports to keep them fit.
