Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I love an interactive classroom. I'm a firm believer that children will not learn unless they are excited about the subject and feel that the subject somehow applies to them. Our class is sometimes quiet, but often a crazy room full of students motivated to discover what is going on in the world.

I teach between 120-160 middle school students a day, in a low income area.

There are many students in my classes that don't have access to current quality literature. Many have parents that are working when they get home from school. While they are in my care I want to give my students every opportunity to succeed and be prepared for high school.

My Project

Children cannot be just fed facts and be expected to enjoy school and learn. They must read with understanding, write with passion, and experiment to discover the world around them. We will use the Scholastic Science World Magazine as a tool. The magazine will allow students to read current topics and have meaningful discussion with their peers. The magazine has been a fantastic motivation for reading. They contain exciting, relevant and gross articles that kids love! We have to find ways of hooking kids into reading.

Text books have become a thing of the past in classrooms.

Most schools lack the funding for new books. Therefore, it is a constant battle to find quality texts for students to work with. Science World is timely, colorful and interesting. With this donation my students will always have access to the most current science facts and it is my hope that they will become excited about reading and science!
