Keeping Cozy in Harlem While Studying College Work!
My students need warm socks to keep toes toasty, tissues for runny noses, Lysol wipes to eradicate germs and energy snacks to keep alert during test preparation.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
These students have elected to challenge themselves with college work while still in high school. Each of them is enrolled in either my AP Statistics or my AP Microeconomics course. They aim to prove that they are capable of working at a college level and to develop strong analytical skills.
These students have plans for their lives; they refuse to let their current situations dictate the rest of their lives.
They realize that a solid education is the key to financial independence and career success. Although in most cases, my students' family situations are currently challenging and they are living well below the poverty level, they have big plans for their own lives. As I've observed their work product and study habits over the past semester, it is my assessment that they have the intellect and the work ethic to make their dreams become their reality.
My Project
There are three months remaining until the Advanced Placement Exams. At this point, we are into our serious crunch time. My students and I are spending a lot of time together doing and reviewing practice questions.
Students focus on instruction best when they are warm, fed and healthy.
During our test prep time together, and during their home study time, students get hungry. The energy snacks will help students stay focused and alert while they prepare for the big exam. It has been very cold in New York City and many students do not have adequate footwear. These warm socks will help keep toes warm so that students are not distracted by cold feet. The tissues will help with all the runny noses that are experiencing during this flu season. The Lysol wipes will help students keep their desk area clean and germ free so that they do not need to be absent and miss instruction due to illness. The Lysol wipes will allow students to keep their work space disinfected to minimize the opportunity to contract a virus. Students need to be in school to learn, so we want to keep all students healthy so that they do not need to stay home due to illness.
