Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"I understand this now!" Nothing makes me happier than hearing my students say that statement. It is what drives me as a teacher. My students come from diverse backgrounds and interests, but the common thread with all of them is that they have an interest and a passion for science.
I am fortunate to have a variety of chemistry students, from those that are fulfilling a graduation requirement in Chemistry, my pre-IB Chemistry students preparing for their IB diploma program, and my AP Chemistry students who are passionate about science and want to experience more science classes.
For my chemistry and pre-IB chemistry students, this is their first exposure to chemistry, and I want to foster, encourage, and support an interest in the topic. My AP Chemistry students are students who have taken chemistry previously and have decided that it is a subject they want to continue to pursue and investigate further.
It is my goal to create a classroom that supports and fosters a love of science in my classroom through the utilization of technology, literary works, science equipment, and materials that embrace a supportive classroom community.
My Project
With limited school budgets it can be very difficult to make it through the year with the supplies that we need in our classroom. Unfortunately, hand soap, bandaids, and Kleenex are all things that the students value and are thankful they have access to in my class, but I have run out of all of those and can not provide my students the work environment I want without them.
My students deserve to have a place to learn chemistry where they can be healthy, and have access to things that can help them stay that way.
I want my students to have access to the simple things that make the school day a more comfortable and healthy experience. The hand soap is important not only for germs, but to also wash after each lab we do. I really need these items for my class so that I can focus on teaching the students chemistry, and not worrying about if the students who are not feeling well have Kleenex, or if the students have access to hand soap to help them stay healthy. Helping the students and providing them a safe, clean, healthy environment matters so much to me.
