Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is located in a small town made up of many immigrants from Mexico and Russia. We are a trilingual district committed to teaching multiculturalism and a 2nd language for all students. My 2nd grade classroom is made up of students who are ALL learning English as a second language. We are also helping them to further develop their academic Spanish so they can truly be bilingual. All of my students receive free lunch and their enriching experiences at school are often the only ones they receive due to high poverty rates.
My students come from a Mexican heritage but most were born here in the United States. Due to the high poverty rate of our families many of them do not get to experience their rich cultural backgrounds through history and the arts outside of school. We also struggle with the reality that art in schools is slowly disappearing to make way for scripted programs in math and literacy. Our school is facing large budget cuts this year and the money for supplies for things that are not absolutely essential is scarce.
During this project we will study the life and paintings of Diego Rivera. This will tie in to our studies of important people in the Mexican culture and our study of Diego's wife, Frida Kahlo. We need books about Diego's life and examples of his work. We also need art supplies (watercolor paints) to create our own mini-mural in the likeness of Diego Rivera.
Through this project my students can connect to their own rich cultural history in a hands-on and memorable way. It will promote literacy in both of their languages and also enhance their skills as creative and artistic individuals.
With your help you are supporting the next generation of bilingual and bi-cultural individuals who are proud and knowledgeable about who they are. Let's keep art alive and breathing in schools - children's imaginations need to be cultivated now so that they can dream big in their futures!
