This year I took on the role of a high school counselor after being an intervention specialist for the last six years. I am so passionate about my new position as our district strives to meet the social-emotional needs of our students.
In the school system where I teach, more than half of our students are low-income students.
More often than not, some of my students come to school without even their most basic needs being met. This typically means I need to make sure I have a variety of resources at my fingertips to be able to provide my students with everything they need to be able to learn and succeed. My goal is to set them up to be mindful, independent, contributing members to society.
My Project
As a school counselor, I have found that many of my students respond positively to art therapy when trying to regulate their emotions.
Whether it be depression, frustration, anxiety, or coping with a traumatic event, art therapy helps my students cope effectively to help them get through tough times.
The materials I have chosen for this project include clay, sketchbooks, coloring books, therapy putty, notebooks, and colored pencils. All of these options will meet the needs of my students individually as they can choose what best works for them. Working with clay is a favorite of my students as it allows them to shape their experiences and talk through their problems. They enjoy getting to keep their artwork as a memory of what we discuss and to help them reflect on what they learned going forward.
I love my job as a counselor and I am so thankful that I get to see the progress that art therapy brings to my students. These materials will help us continue to use art therapy as a positive experience during our counseling sessions.
