Keeping a Calm Classroom Environment

My students need items to keep them calm, such as an oil diffuser, sensory tools, light covers, kinetic sand, and a weighted lap pad.

My Students

My students are ages 18-21 and have unique abilities that differ from other students their same age. In our class, they will work on vocational and functional skills more than they would focus on academic areas. This is to prepare each of them for life after high school.

While each of them have different needs, they are all very talented, caring, and loving individuals.

They deserve the best educational experience they can get, and I hope to give them just that!

My Project

Because of the sensory needs most of my students have, they may become quickly overwhelmed by their surrounding environment. By eliminating sound, lights, and adding calming techniques, they will be able to learn to the best of their ability.

Instead of being reactive, my goal is to incorporate these calming devices into my classroom to be proactive to my students' needs.

I plan on using the oil diffuser every day in order to relax and calm the students, so that they are able to focus and learn. The light covers and earmuffs will also create a more calming environment, especially students that get overstimulated by bright lights/noise. For students that struggle with overstimulation or anxiety, the kinetic sand, sensory tools, and weighted lap pad will help relief stress.

They will benefit largely from these additions by being able to balance out their sensory needs in a calming environment. This will ensure positive behaviors are maintained throughout the day and also that they will be more focused during their academics studies.
