This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Can I go book shopping?" is the question my students continue to ask me every week. I would love for my students to continue loving books and to always be excited for the next one they are about to read. This can be tricky when our library lacks the variety and quantity of books they need.
To the children of our school in the South Bronx, school is one of their favorite places.
They know that when they come to school they will learn and they will be loved. They are empathetic, kindhearted, and determined young individuals. They learn these qualities from their peers, teachers, and even the books they indulge in. Our school is located in a high poverty area and many of our students reside in housing projects. Our school provides these children with the skills they need in order to succeed in middle school, high school, and in life. Our school places a heavy importance on literacy, doing our absolute best to raise their reading and writing skills. Our students make this easy for us because of how much they love reading books. They cannot wait to get their hands on the next new book!
My Project
Students will be using these books to improve their reading fluency and comprehension. These books contain reading levels from M-U in order to meet the diverse needs of all the fourth graders in our school. These books will allow students a choice in what book they want to read which will increase their motivation for reading. They will be beyond excited to have choices from books about bullying, to popular series, and popular authors. Students will be using these books throughout the year for independent reading books and for homework. The books in this set also connect with our units of study such as character development, historical fiction, and mystery. This allows the fourth graders to apply the reading strategies they have learned. Students would benefit from a variety of genres, subjects, and authors in many ways.
Thank you in advance for your kind donations.
Fourth graders will be able to experience the new and popular books kids all over the city are reading. They will be able to connect their personal lives with the realistic fiction books. They will be able to apply strategies they have learned in their historical fiction and mystery books. These books will help continue to share a love of reading throughout the fourth grade!
