As a counselor in a low-income/high poverty school, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My students are creative, clever and very spontaneous.
They like to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and all receive free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my school I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly help control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My students need navy uniform jackets for school days. Our school district has a policy that all jackets must be navy when worn inside the school building. Many of our students do not have a solid navy jacket. They are allowed to wear any jacket to the school, but once inside, they must take off their non-navy jacket. Students are often cold in the classroom so navy jackets would allow them to focus on learning rather than being uncomfortable. I believe that many parents are doing all they can to find solid navy jackets. Jackets seem to disappear from the store shelves mid-January. January and February are our coldest months. It would create a positive impact on learning to help these children with a jacket when they need it most.
Students need the warmth and security of a navy jacket so that they do not feel cold on their walk to school or in the school building.
I love all my students and if I can help them with this one small item, that would be awesome!
