Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Having enough supplies and the storage to keep them organized will allow every student to fully experience the joy, teamwork, and learning that environmental science brings to our students. Our students have had the option for the last three years to sign up for environmental science as their elective class. The class, curriculum, and learning has grown as we have added new garden beds to our school garden, added climate reading with books like Two Degrees by Alan Gratz, we study how indiginous people used the land, and have started a campus beautification and recycling program. The class is now being requested by so many students that we have added another section; this means that twice as many students will be able to experience this hands-on class.
In this ever changing environment of climate change, it is important to empower our students with knowledge of what is happening and why and to give them the ability to make positive changes within their community and the world.
Farm to table solutions and understanding their carbon and other footprints as well as learning how things have changed over the years is important to show students that they can make a change for the better. Students are stressed and anxious about the future and knowledge is power. This class begins to give them the power they will need to face their future.
