My Project

I teach at one of the largest school in West Hawaii. We have a diverse group of students. Although majority of our students are predominately disadvantaged and minorities from low income households, they are resilient, have a strong sense of community and care for one another. Due to the impact of COVID-19 many of our students struggle with anxiety, depression, anger, substance addiction, and trauma. Creating an office space that helps students relax and de-stress can show kids that they have spaces on campus where they can express themselves and de-escalate from different triggers they experience. In addition to creating a safe space for students, I hope to engage them with skills that help them socialize, reflect, stay mindful, and hope for a better future.

The chairs are for their comfort, the college books will help them create a plan for their future, and the cards and books on social emotional learning is to help provide healthy skills for dealing with stress and socializing.
