This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My third grade class is a diverse, energetic and creative group of learners. Our class population has varied language backgrounds as more than fifty percent are ELL students. Seventy-five percent of our class receive free/reduced breakfasts and lunches and we service transitional-kinder through grade five. My enthusiastic students work hard and thrive on the school-wide STEAM/AVID focus.

Students use traditional pencils, plain and colored, to express themselves as ARTISTS, SCIENTISTS, MATHEMATICIANS, and AVID SCHOLARS.

The need for a reliable pencil sharpener to keep their "writing tools" sharp and ready to use is evident. A varied collection of pencils, plain and colored, provide students choices and motivation to learn and produce hands-on projects as well as to stay organized and ready to learn. I believe my students will be excited to have this basic classroom need, "pencils", available and accessible.

My Project

I am seeking colored pencils and plain pencil choices for my classroom. However, having the pencils is not enough unless you have the resources to keep them up and maintain them over a period of time. I am also hoping to receive three pencil sharpeners. One that can be used for sharpening colored pencils and the other two for our everyday pencils. Although I always tell my students that there are no mistakes in art, often times students change their minds on how they want to illustrate something and the average eraser doesn't always do the trick. By providing good quality erasers my goal is to allow students to change their minds without completely starting over.

My project is important because I feel that school should be a place where all students have an equal opportunity to learn, express themselves and share whatever it is that they find important.

The reality is that not all of my students have the same access to things at home, so if I can provide them with that opportunity through access to materials, I will do whatever it takes to do that.
