This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a diverse first grade, integrated collaborative teaching (ICT) class, with a combined mixture of general and special education students at a large, high-needs, Title I school in the north Bronx. Although the majority of students come from low-income homes or from homes with limited parental involvement, they are enthusiastic and truly come to school every day ready to learn. These children see school as a consistent part of their daily lives and strive daily to make me proud.

My 24 first graders are some of the happiest children I have ever had the pleasure of working with.

Not only do several of them struggle with unstable home lives, but many cope with various disabilities, such as ADHD, autism, and speech and language impairments. These kids inspire me to provide the best education I can for them.

My Project

The global pandemic has affected all aspects of our daily life, and we’re all adapting to what has become a “new normal.” Although I am excited that schools are opening back up in September, I want to take the necessary precautions to keep everyone safe and healthy by providing my students with additional kid-size masks to wear during the day. I also want to provide the option for face shields for those who have difficulty keeping masks on. A contactless thermometer will be used to take the temperature of students who don’t feel well, so I can immediately notify parents to pick their child up if necessary. Unfortunately, we are not provided with ample cleaning supplies, so I am requesting cleaning wipes for students to clean their spaces throughout the day as well as paper towels. I strongly believe that in-person learning is achievable, so as long as we are all conscientious about sanitation and cleanliness. Thank you for supporting us!
