My Students
Reading is the key to a child's success! For my struggling students living in high poverty, they yearn for an engaging way to get lost in the pages of a captivating story. I want to help my students to experience the joy of reading as they pave the way for a successful future!
My students live in a high needs urban area with limited supplies and difficult family lives.
Many children grow up in bilingual homes and bring limited English skills to the classroom. In our ICT classroom, my 29 munchkins are a mix of general education and special education students who struggle to read grade level texts. Nevertheless, my student's eyes brighten up each time a book is opened and lively pictures and words jump off the page! School is a safe place for the children to escape to learn and grow at their own pace. My students have been learning to read with broken, ripped, and inadequate leveled books due to a dwindling school budget. They amaze me each day as they continue to stay positive and eager to learn despite their daily struggles.
My Project
With these new read-alongs, the children will be able to read both independently and with small groups in our classroom listening center. The students will have the opportunity to hear new vocabulary words pronounced and as they add them to their ever-growing bank of knowledge. Through the use of read-alongs, my students will squeal with excitement as they follow along to classic stories that will remain favorites in their lives forever. In addition, the new books will help students improve their fluency and decoding skills to close the gap and meet grade level Common Core reading standards.
It would mean the world to my students and I to have these exciting new read-alongs in our classroom.
These unique tools will help each of my unique learners unlock their full potential and explore the exciting and wonderful world of reading!
