My Students
Music brings a classroom alive in a way that few activities can. I teach in a 3K-fifth grade, public elementary school with a diverse population of about twelve hundred students. My students are generally from low socioeconomic status, immigrant families, from all corners of the globe. The ability to participate in a music ensemble, to play an instrument or sing, is a unique opportunity for many of these students.
I have seen music not only enrich their lives, but also give those who may not excel in other areas a chance to shine.
This is why, when we live in a world where music is often the first on the fiscal chopping block, it is so important to keep such opportunities alive for our children.
My Project
One of the biggest hurdles when teaching guitar to groups of students is keeping all of the instruments in tune. In the past, I have just tuned the instruments myself so that I can focus on teaching the music. Now that I am teaching remotely, that is not an option.
These guitar tuners will make it easier to teach my students to tune their own instruments, giving them more agency in the process.
My guitar classes will hopefully be a family affair, as I intend to have my students teach what they learn to someone else in their home.
